The Family Tree of

Indo-European Languages

Brittonic or Brithonic refers to the Celtic language spoken in Britain which eventually broke up into Cumbric, Welsh, Cornish and Breton.

Cumbric or Cumbrian was the Celtic language spoken in Cumbria, North West England and which died out in the middle ages. There is not enough written Cumbric surviving to reconstruct the language but some shepherds in the Lake District are known to count their sheep in Cumbric.

The last native speaker of Cornish, the Celtic language of Cornwall in South West England, died in 1774 but the Cornish language has been revived.

Welsh in Wales and Breton in Brittany, Northern France still flourish as working official languages with both native and new speakers.

Native Breton speakers can usually understand Cornish. This is because the Bretons are descended from Celts who migrated to Brittany (France) from South West Britain during the Anglo-Saxon invasion.
