The 13 Historical

Welsh Counties

The Thirteen Historical Welsh counties which

developed during the Middle age and existed until 1974

Denbighshire, Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire,

Brecknockshire and Monmouthshire were established

by Act of Parliament of 1535 to the replace the

Marcher Lordships which were a colonial

occupation system. The other 7 counties had existed

since the 13th century.

Welsh Counties

1974 -1996

Now called the Preserved Counties

The Welsh counties were changed in 1974 and the names

of some ancient Welsh Kingdoms were revived.

It had been disputed for centuries as to whether

Monmouthshire was in England or Wales or even in both.

A court ruling put it in Wales and the county of Gwent

was created which roughly corresponds to it.

The 1974 to 1996 Counties are now known as the Preserved Counties of Wales. The modern county arrangements use the Preserved County format as a blueprint although a few alterations have been made, some as recently as 2003. Parliamentary constituencies do not usually cross Preserved County boundaries.

The Preserved Counties are also used as designated areas for Lord Lieutenancy  A Lord Lieutenant is monarch's personal representatives in a designated area in the United Kingdom. The position has been very powerful in the past but is now mainly ceremonial.

The Preserved Counties now contain the following Local Government Areas;
